'Zune 30 Midnight Meltdown' Angers Music Lovers

advertisement

Microsoft wasn't immediately available for comment on what observers are calling the Zune 30 Midnight Meltdown. But the forums are ablaze with complaints and demands for updates from Microsoft.

"I had my Zune docked on its iHome ZN9, charging, and all the sudden I hear it start whirring as I'm sitting here at the laptop. I looked up just in time to see it restarting itself at exactly 12:00 midnight, watched the loading bar, and then the freeze. Great. WHAT is going on!?"

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This is being widely reported, and has been acknowledged by Microsoft.

Seems the 30GB versions of the Microsoft Zune music player are bricking at exactly 12:00am today, December 31st, 2008. No reason has yet been given for the aparent bug. Microsoft is working on a fix.

So, turnes out it was indeed a leap year bug. According to Microsoft, Dec 31st 2008 doesn't exist because it's the 366th day of the year.

Microsoft has posted a fix. It basically consists of draining the battery and waiting until 12:00pm (EST) on New Year's Day, then charging it back up. The problem should fix itself.
